The adventures of Jeremy the Green Woodpecker

Hello! I’m Jeremy and I live in Sharphill Wood. I’m a green woodpecker, you know, and I am quite shy – if I see you watching me I will hide behind a tree trunk. You can see me all year round in the Wood. I eat insects and ants if I can get them! There are not enough of us in Britain so people like my Friends look out for us when they can.

Oo…er! I don’t usually like to be this close to people, especially when they have axes! But Rich is my Friend and he’s only joking…..I think?…..

I see people walking in the Wood looking at these – they tell them which way they can go to stay on the paths. You see – the Wood belongs to me and all my friends in the Wood, (like the other birds, the squirrels and badgers, the hares and rabbits and all the others) but we allow humans to walk around on the paths – that way they don’t scare us or disturb us, especially if they have big scary dogs”

Ooooooo! What is this? There are lots of these in the Wood and once they are there, they stay….unless one of my kind Friends takes them away – -are you a kind Friend?

Ahhhh! These Friends are making borders for the paths through the Wood so that people know where to go. Also the paths can be very muddy – I don’t mind because I stay up in the tall trees, but I know that people don’t like their shoes to get very muddy. I heard my Friends say that they are going to put down stuff to make the paths dry.

Some people have been chopping down trees – I wonder why they would do that in a Wood? And they have put little caps on the trunks too. Hmmmm….I must ask my Friend Rich the reason for that next time I see him.

Jeremy it’s like this…..there are just too many sycamore trees – they block the sunlight from coming through the treetops. So we cut them down to give the oaks, the beeches, the holly trees and all the other trees a chance. And then, to stop them growing again we put some stuff on the stumps so that they die. The little caps stop the rain from washing off the stuff, but it doesn’t harm you or your bird friends.

I get it! That’s very clever. We birds like oak, beech, ash, lime and elm trees very much! So whatever you can do, we’re with you.

These were the adventures I had today in Sharphill Wood – do you want to learn about me? If you would you can click on this link. I would peck it for you but I can’t!
