The results are, that out of 25 boxes in the wood, 5 were found to contain complete nests and 4 showed signs of activity and incomplete nests.
One nest had 4 un-hatched eggs which could either be as a result of the nest being abandoned or that not all the eggs hatched out of a larger clutch. The eggs were Great Tit eggs and they would normally lay 8-13.
It was interesting to note that the nest boxes along the eastern hedgerow, where most feeding activity can be observed, were completely unused. The boxes with nests or signs of activity were all in the middle of the wood.
Some boxes showed signs of having their holes expanded by woodpeckers but none of these had any sign of bird activity within the box.
These results compare favourably with 2009 when only 1 box contained a nest.
