Sharphill Wood was officially opened as a Local Nature Reserve on 7th July 2010 by the Mayor of Rushcliffe Borough Council, Councillor Mrs Marie Males, and children from the Ruddington Children’s Nursery. The sun shone and there were many well wishers present to celebrate the opening.

On 12th July we entertained 26 guides from St. Paul’s to some conservation activities in the Wood, as part of the Rushcliffe 4Uth Festival. These included leaf and tree identification, mini beast hunts and general information on how to protect a Local Nature Reserve. Further activities may follow!

Then on 9th August some 120 Scouts from West Bridgford and Europe helped shift a huge load of woodchip up to the wood and carried out many other useful jobs as part of their jamboree. The sun shone again and everyone had a great time achieving a great deal on the day.

We can’t promise sunshine, but the Friends of Sharphill have their regular work party on the fourth Sunday of most months, as follows: 28 November, 23 January 2011, 27 February, 27 March and 24 April. We meet at 10 am and work on various jobs until 4 pm or, if exhausted, earlier.

On Boxing Day, 26th December, we will be a having a nature walk around the wood from 10.30 am, meeting at Peveril Drive. Come along and work off the Christmas pud!
