At the beginning of the year we reviewed the management plan agreed with Rushcliffe Borough Council and Notts Wildlife Trust. The review highlighted just how much work had been done so far and what needed revisiting e.g. paths (although it is a bit like the painting of the fourth bridge when it comes to path edging and woodchip). If you would like to view the full management plan please use the link below http://www.sharphillwood.org/content/management-plan
The monitoring of the creatures, flora and fauna, that live in or visit the wood is an important part of the Friends Groups role as it helps to maintain the health of the wood. This is being done by arranging a rolling programme of surveys. These have now started the first was the nest box survey, with results showing increased usage of the bird boxes over the last few seasons. www.sharphillwood.org/content/birdsurveyresultsmarch2012
Bird, plant, butterfly, insect, and other surveys will all be taking place over the next few months and will be added to the website.
The first three regular Sunday work parties have taken place and we are well and truly speeding into the breeding season for the creatures that inhabit the wood.
So, let`s look back over the last three months ………..
January saw the final whips planted, to strengthen the perimeter of the wood mainly along the east side, however some were also added to the south and north side of the wood. This work is to strengthen the boundary edges of the wood prior to building work, and had to be completed before spring set in to give the whips the best chance of survival. The January work party was also the 4th anniversary of the friend`s groups first meeting which started the group off, the group has come a long way since then.
In early February the friends group were contacted by the 4th West Bridgford Scout Group offering to help on a work party. They came along and spent a fantastic work party with us, to find out more ….. www.sharphillwood.org/content/workpartysunday27thfebruary2012
March saw our first work party of the year during the breeding season so extra care needed to be taken when organising the work to be completed.
Looking forward to summer!!
